Paulo Nupi is a DJ who likes to dance. His motto is a sentence stollen from Miss Kittin: “»How can you be a dj if you don’t like to shake your ass in the middle of the crowd?”

Very early in life he revealed an appetency for music. At the age of 4 he was already deciding what people should listen and dance in parties at home. When he was 6 he started going to record shops and listen to the new records. He spent hours and hours listening to music everyday. His favorite gifts were musical instruments and records. Two years later he went for the first time, with his parents, to a club and was fascinated, asking himself how can a DJ make those transitions between songs. He dedicated all his teen years to music research and to learning how to play several instruments and reading music and solfeggio. Then his best friends become DJs and he was always with them choosing records.

In college he started going to parties and clubs in Lisbon. Soon he was invited to play records, officially for the first time at A Capela Bar at Bairro Alto. After that, he started being invited to play everywhere in the underground circuit.

A music researcher, he is currently one of the most requested DJs in Lisbon, playing regularly in several places such as Lux-Frágil, A Capela, O Estado Líquido, Lei Seca, Clube da Esquina, Arena Lounge, Mexe Café, Fluid or Op Art, etc.

He enjoys dealing with the playful side of music without putting aside contemporary cultural concerns, always being very aware of new tendencies and musical currents that come up in the international artistic panorama.

What music?

«House, techno, idm, funk and everything around these. Anything that has a certain mental flavor and brings that groove to the body. The sets vary dependending on the venue: “I will not play the same records in a mega rave and in a small bar. For example, in Clube da Esquina I’ll go for more soulful tracks and some transgenerational hits, whereas in A Capela Bar I’ll choose a more raw type of music, but always with some groove, a fusion somewhere between techno, dub and house. In Lux it also varies depending on the stage I play, but I am rather more instinctive, because that I s a dance floor that allows it. This means I work more according to the people present in the room than with a pre-established sound line. Maybe that’s why the result is an always different combination of sounds. In general, I detest moorings and limits. Party is party. Life celebration: this is music for me. When I look at the dance floor, I like seeing joy above all things. I’m happy to be able to make others happy even if only momentarily. The shaking of the hips, the gleaming look, the lack of control, the raving, the exaltation, out of control, the felt dance. «
